Hello Members, Would you like to help someone less fortunate than yourself? Here is an opportunity to reach out to people in our own community, who are having a hard time feeding their families and making ends meet. We have an member who is part of a Gleaners group. What they do is harvest from food growers fields or gardens and donate the food to local Food Banks. If you have blessed with an over abundance of food in your fields or gardens and don't know what to do with the excess please call this gleaners group. If you have a large amount to donate please call them 2 weeks advance so they can organize volunteers and trucks. They will glean the donated foods and truck the food for you. All you have to do is make the call...

Dear Members,
Margaret Scott has given me the contact for donation of table grapes to Oasis, Royce Wright, phone number, 1 208 459 -6000, at 611 13th St South, Caldwell, Idaho. On Wednesdays, they feed between 100-180 families and would welcome table grapes. Right now, he feels they could handle between 800-900 lbs/wk. If you would like to donate edible grapes (reds, greens, or blacks are AOK), he welcomes them.If possible put your grapes in boxes. If you can not deliver, he may have help to pick them up. Oasis is an agency of the Food Bank. Cindy can you email ??? to our members? I am sure there are other agencies that would welcome donations also. Deliveries are on Tuesdays (all day) and Wednesdays am, prior to 10. Thanks, Ken

Brian and Gary from Sunriver will present a Power Point presentation on harvesting. We are all greatly indebted to them for their work on this as it will be a major tool propelling us toward a successful harvest. They will be covering harvesting and packing procedures. This will be a good time to ask any questions you have regarding harvest.
After this portion of the meeting which is for the general membership, all us marketing through Sunriver will meet to discuss logistics such as sharing a pallets and transporation to the cold storage. We urge all of you to make this meeting a priority to attend and if you can not attend, please send someone who can take notes etc. as this meeting is a key ingredient to our success.

Department of Plant, Soils and Entomological Sciences Pomology Program Annual Fruit Field Day
The University of Idaho Annual Fruit Field Day will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2009 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. The registration will start at 8:30 am and program will start at 9:00 am. Several cultivars of new table grapes, peaches, nectarines, apples, quinces, Asian pears, and other alternative fruits will be presented during the tour. Participants can taste many of these fruits. Highlights of this event will be: 1) Presentation and tasting of several types and cultivars of fruits at the main office complex and discussion on application of growth bio-regulators in fruit crops 2) Tour of the U of I comprehensive research projects on ‘Fuji’ apple irrigation and nutrition, chemical thinning, and pesticides uses 3) Tour of the alternative fruit crops, including quinces, Asian pears, persimmons, Jujube, Haskaps, and mulberries 4) Tour of the table grape vineyards, new grape canopy experiment, peaches and nectarines, and discussion/questions/answers on various cultural practices of fruit crops, including planting, growth regulators, pruning, thinning, girdling, pest control, and irrigation. Where: University of Idaho, Parma Research & Extension Center in Parma, on the lawn in front of the main office complex. Going west on Highway 20/26 in Parma, turn right at M&W grocery store, go for about 1/3 mile and turn left on U of I Lane and go north for about 1 mile. When: Thursday, September 3, 2009, Starts at 8:30 am (sharp) till 1:00 pm Cost: Free of Charge Who Can Participate? Open to the Public. Those interested in fruit production, including commercial growers, small farm growers, alternative fruit growers, home gardeners, Master Gardeners, horticultural professionals, graduate students, extension and research faculty/staff, horticultural hobbyist, and fruit industry representatives are welcome. Greetings Idaho Preferred Members!
To kick off Idaho Preferred Month (September) we have teamed up with Thunder Mountain Line in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho to host “The Locavore Express!” Thunder Mountain Line is a historic train that travels from Horseshoe Bend along the river to Banks. On Sunday, August 30th the 1:30 train will become the Locavore Express…featuring Idaho wine and spirits in the bar cars and a gourmet all-Idaho meal at on the riverbank at Banks. Consumers who come aboard the train will have a chance to meet Idaho farmers, winemakers, specialty food producers and any other Idaho Preferred member who would like to come along. First Lady Lori Otter has been invited to be our hostess for the train and Director of the Department of Agriculture Celia Gould will be joining us as well. We will be promoting the Locavore Express to consumers via radio, newspaper, web and viral marketing and we hope to sell out the 350 passenger train.
If you would like to ride the train with us, please log on to www.thundermountainline.com and book your ticket! We (ISDA/Idaho Preferred) will NOT be selling the tickets – they are only available through the Thunder Mountain Line ticket outlet.
This fun new adventure is being co-sponsored by Sysco of Idaho. Their corporate Chef, Randy King (formerly of DoubleTree Riverside) will be designing and preparing the Locavore dinner. They will also be helping underwrite the cost of the food for this event – so if you are currently distributed through Sysco and would like to be included in the menu – let me know….However, you do not have to be a Sysco vendor to have your products represented. We will try to include as many Idaho products as we can in the menu. Also – we will be offering Idaho wines and spirits on the train and at the dinner (Details being worked out but alcohol will NOT be free – either sold by the glass or sampling tickets sold) – so if you are an interested winery, let me know.
If you would like to provide product or have your products considered for this historic and unique “Locavore Express,” please drop me a note.

2009 Order Form; RESPONSE NEEDED BY NOON TUESDAY JULY 07, 2009 (See attached order form below)
Hi all,
I have attached the 2009 order form for grape supplies. I will be sending out the orders this Tuesday so please have your orders in to me by noon Tuesday. We do not have a price yet for the bags as we need to print something on it to distinguish it from the California market. To do this so close to harvest will result in a special run, but Brian believes that we will more than cover our extra cost with labeling our region on the bag. We are currently working on the least expensive way to accomplish this. A few things about ordering: Please send your quantity to me and a check payable to SRTGGA to P.O. Box 190566 • Boise, Idaho • 83719. We will need at least 50% down with the balance payable at receipt. All these supplies can be used next year so we recommend to order in larger quantities than you expect to make sure that everything is covered. Once this order goes out, we will not be able to order any more before harvest. We will be using the same boxes for retail and industrial grapes. All grape boxes will need one (1) SO2 pad and two (2) absorbent pads. All grape boxes will need one (1) lid. Each pallet will need four (4) corner boards and three (3) straps. For conservative purposes, plan on seventy-five (75) boxes per pallet. For the SO2 pads and absorbent pads, you may not need a full box so I would recommend rounding up to the nearest 1/4 or 1/2 box. As for bags, only the grapes that go into retail will need bags. The industrial pack will not have a bag and will be packed directly into the box. However, we recommend that you order enough bags for your whole crop as we will not know how much will go to retail and industrial until closer to harvest. Remember, you can always use the bags next year, but we will not be able to order any more this year. The grape bags will have the Idaho Preferred and Buy Idaho label on them. We are wording it in a way so that our growers from other states i.e. Oregon can use the same bag as well. It will say something like "Idaho growers, members Idaho Preferred and Buy Idaho" As always, If you have any questions, feel free to call or email. We just got a call from Essie this morning, dormant spraying will begin Monday April 20, 2009 at the University of Idaho vineyards. It is suggested that you get it done right away as any delays could cause blooms to burn. |
Hello SRTGGA Members,
We received a letter from Ben Simko of the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, Entomology Program, he has asked for our grower’s participation in helping to monitor pest and disease in our grape vineyards.
This program will help the industry as a whole as it is important to stay on top of what could be lurking in our fields. The more grower’s that sign up the better sampling, which will give us a better view of the overall health of our vineyards in this region.
Please carefully read and follow the instructions in Mr. Simko’s memo. Please be proactive and sign up to insure our industry succeeds.
